Though “fun” is a term that has a definition, and the concept of “fun” may be the same for everyone, young or old, the definition of “fun” is certainly a matter of taste, experience, and maturity.

Although your idea of having enjoyable could change as you get older, there are very few activities that are off-limits for those who are healthy, but despite that, the majority of older people, especially those in senior living costa mesa, desire a slower pace and a social component to what they take part in to have enjoyable.

Here are some fun ideas for seniors to take part in.

Board Games

So many board games available that it’s almost impossible to narrow them down to suit every taste however suffice it to say, board games give seniors a reason to gather together with friends and talk or just enjoy the game! There are games that involve words, such as Bananagrams or Scrabble that are widely played as well as Monopoly or Scattergories that are fast-paced and focused on strategy. It’s recommended you select a game with pieces that are easy for all players to grasp, including those with impairments of motor functions. Also, pick a game everyone in your group will like (one that’s not overly difficult and isn’t too difficult for everyone who will be playing).

Journaling/Writing

There are numerous activities such as writing and art that need a professional or at the very least a mature eye or voice to express something of value to the rest of humanity. Many well-known, highly successful writers didn’t begin their writing careers until they were in their 60s or more, so if you’ve never really tried to put pen to paper to write something for people else to read, it’s fine. Laura Ingalls Wilder is a well-known author who didn’t put her experiences into writing until she reached the age of 65 old. Frank McCourt didn’t record his personal memoirs of growing up poor and disadvantaged until he turned 66. If you have a story to tell you, perhaps it’s appropriate to put it on paper.

Theater

It doesn’t matter whether or not you participate in an area theater or if you gather together a group of buddies and go out for a meal and fun at a local dinner at the theater on a regular basis! Support the local theater scene through working in the areas of sound and lighting, or just by buying tickets regularly to attend performances. Most theaters are always in need of support of one kind or another, so your presence on the scene or even in the auditorium will be appreciated certainly. Theaters are an excellent venue to try out new ideas while socializing with friends.

Hiking/Nature

As they age their stamina decreases, but that shouldn’t prevent you from going outdoors and enjoying hiking and nature! Instead of pushing your body to its boundaries, you can set goals that are different for you, like getting to know and identifying plants in the area you live in. If you reside in a part of the world that’s close to an animal reservoir, state, and national parks you might think about finding quiet spots along trails to sit and observe wildlife. Nature is a wonderful place to be regardless of age. There’s no need to work yourself to find ways to be a part of it!
